Food, Folks & Fun

Yeah, it's the night schedule for work that's gonna do me in, I can tell. After having 3 nights off and getting decent sleep for two of them, then going back to work last night, this morning I'm tired and headachy and could be doing better. On the other hand, only about another month before school starts and I switch to day hours. So I'll just deal with it until then. ^_^

Went to Olive Garden last night w/folks and Niece (Toly had to sit out, had too much to do). The kids were extremely well behaved. No raised voices, no problems, they kept occupied and ate... well, they ate. ;) Imp stuffed himself on breadsticks. Pixie was very hungry and made a point of asking the server when her food was coming (I think he was surprised by that). We brought home lots of leftovers for Toly. I think I probably ate too much even though I tried to limit myself.

"Gelato" is really just ice cream, isn't it? I sure couldn't tell the difference.

Speaking of food, in yesterday's mail I got some little restaurant-serving tubs of Vegemite from bekscilla! Thanks! :) That'll probably be my new food of July, since I'm not sure last night's gelato should count. I'm a bit nervous about trying this, but I'll give it a go since you were so nice to send it to me.

(For those wondering about the food poll, the lychees were already out of stock when I got back. Dang.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelato

looks like, traditional gelato isn't exactly ice cream, since they shouldn't use cream.... instead they use either milk or just water....

So, I ugess it just depends on how authentic the Gelato is, and which part of italy it's coming from.

Considering it's Olive Garden, I wouldn't surprised if their "gelato" is a tub of chocolate ice cream in the back. ;)

YAY! Glad to hear it came :D Just remember - thiiiiin vegemite and you'll be ok!

I've always thought of gelato as watery, rather than creamy, but that seems to be the main difference.

This was more like ice cream, though, not watery, so its connection to actual gelato might've stopped at the name. ^_~

I've had real gelato (in fact, practically lived off it when I went to Italy), and it's nothing like what Olive Garden (or most any other place here) serves. Gelato tastes richer and creamier, even though it doesn't contain cream and is better for you than ice cream. The flavor is usually more intense - lemon gelato is like eating a cold, sweet, creamy lemon. Mmm, gelato.

Yeah, I figured after I posted, "wait, since when is Olive Garden real Italian food?" ;P I doubt anything I could buy mass-market would be close to the real thing.
