Snowball

"Is this it?"

"It is." Push looked over the massive computer console. In an age when small and portable was the norm, this thing was huge, immobile, and yet crammed to the gills with hardware, by the looks of it. "It might take me a minute."

"Take your time, Push." Doc conjured his phantoms and set them to guard the door.

"Watch, the file Triseti wants us to retrieve is actually Statesman's pumpkin pie recipe," Firefly said. There were a few chuckles. In truth, none of them knew exactly what Triseti wanted them to get; she'd simply given Push the filename. Overall it was an easy job, though, so they hadn't asked for details.

Boneshatter stood against the wall, next to the door, thankful he had the Skull mask on to hide his nervousness. The unfamiliar form of the trank gun pressed into his side, under his jacket. To do this he'd have to get Firefly away from the rest, and of course ever since he'd accepted the gun from Teff in the first place, Firefly hadn't been alone for one reason or another. Except in the shower, and the last thing Bone wanted to explain to anyone was why he was dragging off a naked drugged man.

On the other hand, he was glad he hadn't had the chance so far. He wasn't sure if he could do it – betray Firefly and the team and turn the blaster over for the reward money. He'd be on the run ever after, probably. He didn't even know why he still had the gun.

"Got it," Push said. He remained at the I/O port, however.

"That was quick," Drake rumbled. "Let's get out of here."

"Wait," Push said, sounding a bit distracted. "Someone's tampered with the file. It's..." He withdrew the cables sharply. "It's given an alarm."

"Oh, crap," Firefly said.

Think it's a trap? is what Bone wanted to say but didn't – first things first, they had to get out of here. He and the others shouldered past the phantasms and began running or flying to the elevator. They'd have to get up a few levels to get to the door -

"Wait," Doc said. "They're going to expect us that way – where's the exit stairs?"

"Like they won't have someone there?" Drake said. "Let's just bull our way out."

They'd kept running even as they talked, and reached the elevators without incident.

"Doc's right," Firefly said, balking suddenly. "I don't want to get trapped in there. All they need to do is cut the power and we're sunk."

"Then let's go for the stairs already," Drake snapped. "We don't have time to argue about this!"

Push was silent – Bone could see the displays on the cyborg's HUD flickering, and suspected Push was probably trying to find out anything he could about the building. "There's a set of emergency stairs in that direction," he said, pointing vaguely, "and someone's just come in the front door."

That did it. As one, they did an about-face and headed for the stairs.

Rezelman froze in place, along with the rest of the Aligned.

They've changed course. Someone's coming in through the front door, so they're heading for the stairs not far from you, the shard said.

"Who's at the front door?" Terecito said, looking around at the rest of the group.

Dumont shrugged. "Don't know, but it's not a problem. They're coming this way, so let's get ready to greet them."
