Star Wars: the non-spoiler post

Spoiler-free post. The next one will have spoilers/nitpicks. There. Everyone happy now?

  • When they said it would be "darker" I didn't think they meant it literally. There's, what, five scenes that have actual bright lighting?
  • I went into it very negatively 'cause Lucas burned me twice before. It's much better than I expected. I still think New Hope & Empire are better, but at least this one is able to stand proudly with them. At this point, I'd probably watch the series like this: Eps 3, 4 and 5. Skip all others. (Jedi just - ewoks - ugh - )
  • I can actually "see" the transition from Ewan McGregor to Sir Alec Guinness now. Ewan had a bigger role and made the most of it.
  • Toly fell asleep during the boring parts. He did admit he found the movie boring. Even the battles had, to him, a "been there, done that" feel to them.
  • It was certainly pretty, but mostly I ended up thinking about my half-completed Nanowrimo project Suzerain and how I might try to get it started again, especially during the first half of the film. Maybe I'm just jaded by spectacle or something, but all the battle bits got really dull and I found my mind wandering.
  • The movie does explain quite well how Darth/Anakin ends up in the suit, how the twins get separated, etc.

I guess I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars - not quite a classic, but better than average. I have to agree with howardtayler - the Jedi deserved what happened to them. (Go look up his posts if you want the gist of it.)

I was going to add more but it belongs in the spoiler/nitpicky post, so I guess I'll do that one now. And I would so be watching Ep 4 tonight, but my folks aren't done watching it, and they have the only good copy right now.

Anyone who's seen the movie, I direct you to the spoiler/nitpicky post so I can ask some burning questions.

I'm just guessing from this and the spoiler post that you have some kind of aversion to puppets. Maury Povich may be able to help. :)

Hm, let's see...

Negative: Ewoks, Yoda, Fraggles, Jabba the Hutt (he counts, right?)

Positive: Tom Servo & Crow T. Robot, some of the oddball things on Sesame Street... um...

Negative Bigtime: The Muppets! I hate 'em! Burn! BURN!

I guess I do have a puppet issue, though some of them seem to be OK. ^_~

Jabba from the real version of Episode 4 doesn't count. :)

And everyone loves Tom Servo, because gumball machines aren't that threatening.

The real version? Which is that? I like the one without all the extra added crap stuff that Lucas brought in later.

That's the one I mean, where Jabba's just a fat guy in a bad suit . . .

It was re-edited to fit with Return of the Jedi's inhuman Jabba for the 90s re-release, which of course, sucks.

Jeff got really bored with it too. He liked 1 and 2 better!

Heh! Toly's fave is 4 (New Hope) though many people like Empire the best. I guess for me, the sense of "ooh, shiny, look at the battle!" is kind of worn off, given that it happens in so many movies now, and every single one is CGI. (LOTR, Matrix, the crop of spear-and-sandal epics...)

Jeff's favourite is 4 as well - "the origi digi one", says Jeff

Thank you. ^_^ After reading his post, I realized he articulated what had subconsciously been bugging me this whole time about the Jedi.
