LOOK POLISH, EVERYONE

I sent a postcard of an armadillo to Poland (with lots of armadillo facts on the front and my own experiences on the back) and I got back that the name of this animal in Polish is pancernik dziewięciopaskowy

which in English translates to "nine-strip dreadnought"

and of course armadillo means "little armor" in Spanish

so all in all I thought this was actually adorable :D

I'm pretty sure I never heard the word dreadnought before seeing The Last Jedi, and I thought they made it up. I've heard it one other time since then, and then in this post.

It literally means "fearing nothing" and dates from the late 1500s, used to mean large warships. Nowadays associated mostly with battleships.

Etymology, it's what's for dinner! :D

In Norway they're known as "belt-animals." We're imaginative.

I think that's great too! :D It makes sense, because of the bands around their midsection. Ours are nine-banded armadillos, but there are also six-, seven- and three-banded armadillos. In Nahuatl the name translates as "turtle-rabbit".

There are also pink fairy armadillos and giant screaming armadillos and they're just a really fascinating living relative of glyptodonts :D

I've only seen one armadillo in my life, and it was dead and had been made into a lamp-shade my grandmother had. :( Guess what was one of the first things that got tossed in the trash, when her children sorted out her things, after she passed away.

Ever seen any Chupacabras around? X) :P
