"What books were you assigned to read in a class that you still hold a violent and bitter grudge against?"

OH MAN how many, where to start.

Feel free to vent in the comments.

For me:
- Cry the Beloved Country. First book where I realized the teacher was basing the tests on the Cliff Notes and therefore it was not a sign of better intelligence that I refused to use Cliff Notes, it was smarter to use the Notes like everyone else. Have no idea now what the book was about and no interest in looking it up.
- Lord of the Flies. Because the self-righteous kid who was son of 2 lawyers made sure to use his home-grown lawyerly knowledge to do his presentation. Also it's depressing.
- The Red Pony. Also depressing. WHY ARE ALL SCHOOL REQUIRED READING BOOKS DEPRESSING

Counterpoint: I really enjoyed One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch and it's short, too!
