Big Year update

Spring has been pretty thin so far. We do have one new bird, which we have heard a *lot* lately, but not seen. Dad finally ID'd it by call as a summer tanager. This brings us to 113, so we're only 70 short of last year (which was a record high for us).

Master list: https://laridian.dreamwidth.org/2828955.html

We count birdcalls as birds if we can confirm it without question. We've heard this one every morning for several weeks. We had to list Great Horned Owls like that too.

I'm not terribly interested in birds, but I do like to know what's in the backyard, so to speak. National Geographic used to have a very helpful identifier, but now it basically sucks. Do you know of any others online? I've looked but can't find anything useful.

Hmm. This is tricky because we use actual books and our own memorization of fieldmarks to ID birds more than we go online. If we do use online sources it's often to confirm, i.e. "google images for black rail" when we suspect it might already be a black rail.

That said, there is whatbird.com, allaboutbirds.org and Merlin which is a phone app my dad has (which doesn't help you but might help someone else).

There are also time of year and range considerations. We're "coastal Texas" and we get a lot of spring and fall migrants, which are very different than the year-round suburban birds we get here. People can get really excited about such-and-such bird until they find out that that bird isn't found in their region. ;)

Good luck!

Yeah, NG used to have all kinds of criteria like region and time of year. *sigh* Thanks for the links! Hopefully they'll be some help. I hate this little one-horse crap town, but it has some beautiful birds.

I'd love to know what you find out!
