I forgot to post about this when we got it, but we got the birds a bigger cage a while back. It turns out that they should be fine in a cage their whole lives, as long as it's big enough. And when I did some research, the existing cage was meant for one bird, not four.

I did the research because one of them, Curly, was the victim of over-preening. Not on himself; his body feathers were fine. But on his head and neck, he was getting picked bald. Now, they can't reach their own heads and necks, so they preen each other. And Mom and I always suspect Buster of such things because Buster has an attitude, hence his name. (The other two have no defining characteristics that generate nicknames.)

I theorized that maybe they were bored and cramped in the red cage and needed some space. So we spent a chunk of money because Toly may not like people much but he loves animals, and he picked out this very large cage.

Thank goodness this thing is on wheels. Also thank goodness we can put them outside now. They come in at night (I don't trust local wildlife to *not* attempt a break-in) but during the day they're up against the house like that. This lets them have indirect sun but no direct sun and some shelter in case of rain (though it hasn't rained much). Lots of space. It doesn't show it here but I like to cover the floor with branches and leaves, and we add more stuff regularly, like millet, corn husks/silk, etc, stuff for them to play with and on.

Here is a zoom on that same photo, showing you how tiny those guys are. But they can actually fly now, instead of just hop around the cage, and Curly's feathers have grown back, and they have a better quality of life now, with fresh air and sunshine and they get to listen to and respond to the wild birds, and so on.

Aww birbs! Sometimes I am tempted to get a couple of parakeets. I need to do a lot of reading first.

I had parakeets as a kid, and I have a friend who still has some. Like all pets, do your research and determine if they're for you :)

But if they're hand tame, they can at least sit on your finger or shoulder. These guys aren't hand tame, and most finches never can be hand-tamed, so they're aviary or cage birds all their lives.

Which is why Huxrin and I talk about, maybe in future, a cockatiel or something that's "cuddly" (for a bird) and able to come out and be held and played with. I miss that.

Oh yeah, cockatiels! A friend when I was a kid had 2 of them. One was named Lovey, loved people and would say "I love you" but the other was quite shy of people.

Just like people, birds have different personalities :) And it matters a lot if they're hand-tamed or not.

"Embiggen", I like that. X)

Now that's a spiffy cage! I'm sure they're much happier in it. It's great that they get to spend some time outdoors, too.

Huxrin hates that word! :D It actually dates from the late 1800s as earliest recorded form, and even then people said it was ugly. :P But it was the Simpsons that popularized it.

I think they're happier. We started putting them outside as soon as it got warm enough (they can't handle temps at 65 or lower for long at all) and leave them outside all day. It gives them fresh air and sunlight, and yes, they do get to look at things going on. ^_^ I'm glad they like it, because that cage was pricey! and the instructions were nearly nonexistent. But it got put together and all is well. As long as we don't have to take it upstairs!

Actually, it is an ugly word. Like chagrin. But it's funny ugly. That said, if it was popularized by the Simpsons, then I'm not likely to use it myself. XD
