I don't get the "ugly sweater" thing

I never saw them growing up. Nobody I knew ever wore an "ugly Christmas sweater". I don't know anyone who does now. The only UCS I see are the kits for "make your own" and people drawing fanart of characters wearing them.

Was this ever really a thing, and I completely missed out on it somehow (in which case, I'm very happy)? Or is this a made-up tradition?

I just had to do some research on this, and it looks like UCSs are in fact a practical meme, that has its origins in TV and movies from the 80s on. These are some of the articles I found, that give a brief timeline of the Ugly Christmas Sweater.

Thanks for the info! So it's a made-up tradition. Okay. I lived through that whole time and I still don't remember anything about the ugly sweaters, and I loyally watched the Cosby Show and don't remember anything about Cliff Huxtable's sweaters. idk, in the photos, they don't look "ugly" to me. I guess I'm just not tacky and gauche enough to see it for what it is?

tl;dr this is a stupid made-up tradition :P
