I've been with Photobucket about... 14 years now? Something really long-term. And I've happily been on the same plan every year (about $40 iirc) and all has been well.

Of course many of you know about PB's recent antics... and how to get that same level of access, most people now need to pay $400 (!) a year. Which is not worth it.

My own yearly subscription to PB ends in mid-November, but given many of the comments on the PB "maintenance blog" (the only place where people are allowed to comment on the PB site any more), I decided I'd better cancel the auto-renewal early.

You know how most sites, when you go to check your account, it'll say what credit card you have on file, stuff like that? Yeah, PB doesn't. It makes it very hard to find out any information about your own financial status on that site. And to cancel the auto-renewal? You have to email them and ask them to cancel it.

So I did that, a month early, because I was worried that the emails would get ignored/unread. It took about 24 hours for them to cancel it. But I'm still getting emails from PB asking me to sign up, offering discounts, "time to renew your Plus account!" (which afaik is no longer even offered) and of course tons of third party seller emails.

This is going to be really depressing when all my old pix and stories go down, is all I'll say. But I can't fix the link rot across fourteen years of photos. :(

Meanwhile! Nobody else offers what PB used to. SmugMug is the closest I've found for reasonable pricing, photo hosting, 3rd party hosting, folders and so on. They have a free two-week trial and I find them very useful compared to Flickr and so on - among other things, SmugMug allows different levels of privacy on your folders, so you can just share the pictures without having the folder wide open to the world.

If you want to give them a try, here's a referral code:

If you use that to get a paid account, we both get a discount :D

I've also gotten emails from PB. Since I basically used them for the free image hosting here on LJ, I guess I don't have much to complain about. Still, zero to $400 for those of you who really need it is just wrong.

I can understand it not being free any more. They're not getting a real benefit from free service; nobody's buying anything from them and everyone uses adblockers. So I could see them saying "sorry, free service is going away, you have to pay up" being reasonable.

Not reasonable is the complete lack of warning or discussion about this, and the fact that the *only* way to get image hosting from them is the $400. I mean, really? Mighty few people are willing to pay that, and those that are, could probably host their images on their own server somewhere (I have some friends that do that instead of a service like PB).

I would've been willing to consider a minor increase of charge. But not $400.
