Quilt snobbery circa 1982

Which yes is 35 years ago. I found these pages in Stitch N Sew Magazine, March/April 1982. I've included the full one and a detail of the paragraph that made me go "Eh?"

I highlighted another passage here in the detail:

Okay, 35 years ago, there were more war veterans and civilians who remembered it, but... was that really so much of an issue with flashy quilt designs, even then?

This page smacks of a traditionalist who hated modern quilt designs and bright colors and thinks they're the death of quilting. YMMV.

Yesterday, I was looking at a friend's old bedspread which was a mix of mauve, pink, tan, etc. She said it was old and her mother had given it to her, and I almost made the comment wondering WHY people liked such bland things. SHe is going to get a new bedspread today, since she got a Macy's gift card.

I like flashy and bold. At minimum, something colorful, not muted or neutral.

As you can tell from mine, I love color. I know many people love the reproduction fabrics, pastels and muted colors, but to me they're just not that interesting.

I'm still amazed about the "ground zero after a bomber run" comment though! :P

Yeah, that comment was a bit of a stretch.

I think you are probably right on the money. If a quilt catches my eye, I don't much care if it's flashy or has earth tones and what matter does it make if my mother doesn't like it?

Good grief...

My son said "Yeah, when I see one of your brightly colored quilts, Mom, I immediately get flashbacks to the trenches."

And Toly put in: "What, are you marrying the quilt? I know some people really love quilts, but..."

Great comments and they are right on the money. Give me a break. I guess it depends upon how desperate you are to sell a quilt.
