Hmm

Today, a coworker I've known for close to 10 years was talking about how cold the office is, and said to me "You being from Russia, you'd know about that."

...

I didn't react at the time, and that was fine because he just kept talking, and I've just wondered: is it because I'm Basia's friend by marriage? (She is an aunt of my sister-in-law.) Is it because of my (Polish) married name? Do I look Russian? Everyone always said I looked like the Swedish side of the family.

Also, for the record, I have a mild Philadelphia accent that most people probably don't even notice unless they've been there. I don't even talk Polish other than "Jak się masz?" which doesn't come up very often at the office.

Once in a while I get asked something like, "You're not from around here, are you?" or "Where are you from?" One time I said I was from England in my 100% American accent. The person who asked completely bought it.

Maybe I don't look like the typical American, whatever that means? I do think I look more German, which is a big part of my ancestry.

There is a definite "look" to different European ethnicities. I can tell a northern Slavic (Pole, European Russian, Ukrainian, etc) right away by face and eye shape and structure. Once you start recognizing it then it's a definite thing. You kinda can't un-see it (which makes for interesting viewings of movies allegedly set in Russia).

Then there's all the Scandinavians, and the "long northern skull" (which is also a thing) and so on.

So how does one describe the average American look, considering most of us are Euromutts? X)

Fat.

Seriously, Americans are probably the fattest people on earth. And most Americans have fat faces as a result. When my brother goes overseas on business, nobody thinks he's an American, because he's a human toothpick and has been skinny all his life. They assume he's a Brit or an Australian, *maybe* a Canadian, but he can't possibly be American because "Americans are fat".

Oh - and Americans obsess about perfect, blindingly white teeth.

And they want to look airbrushed, aka have no pores and appear to be some species besides human.
