Gardening and old ties

In garden news:

The squash planter somehow dried out, but the radishes, carrots and peas have all sprouted. The lettuce is very healthy and has already provided a few salads. (Not many salad-eaters in our house, including me, so one lettuce does the trick.) Broccoli looks very healthy. Strawberries are producing, but they have no flavor, which is an interesting thing in homegrown strawberries. Still, we'll keep trying.

One tomato is growing leaps beyond the other two, and we're not sure why, but once spring really and truly arrives, we can anticipate tomatoes. We just have to resow the squash seeds, I guess.

In craft news:

While looking through garage boxes, I found a big bag of neckties. Toly hasn't worn them in ten years or more. I figure we should keep one or two for formal emergencies (weddings and such) but what to do with the rest? I could donate them, but I wonder if there's any kind of useful crafting you can do with old neckties? That is, something you could show off and use afterward for purposes other than "and I made this out of old neckties!"

A friend of mine, whose husband passed away from cancer a few years ago, took all of his ties and gave them to her sister. Her sister brought them to a person who made the ties into two commemorative quilts, one for my friend, one for my friend's daughter. For the two of them, it was a wonderful memento of him, and they turned out looking very, very neat.

So, that's something you can do with them!

By the way, I have a packet ready to go to you with those Campbell's labels, and a few other things. I just have to get down to the post office to mail it! ^^;; Just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten!

There's some really neat ideas for neck tie crafts here (I kinda love the lamp in particular):

I've had a couple of ladies come into the shop to show off quilts made from neckties. Also, silk ties are great for crazy quilts. I've actually bought some from thrift stores with the intention of eventually using them in crazy quilts.
