BACC: Vagabond, week 4: Dorm #1

Archive and stats can be found here.

Temple Gate University is now open and accepting students from the El Marrow / Bitter River / Copperhead region! This week starts a new "household" as the Starchild kids go to the newly-constructed college. We also meet three new university students, too!

I used a few CAS sim slots (the university gave 5 upon completion) to make some sims I've wanted to make for a while. Introducing Hoagie, Bernard, and Laverne.

I didn't have the right hair for Hoagie when I created him, but by next session he'll be okay. Hoagie has a dream of becoming the ultimate rock guitarist. His hobbies include belching and creating instant messes.

Bernard is, of course, going to be a scientist. His favorite book is The Chicago Manual of Thermodynamics and he hates clowns. (Who doesn't, right?)

Laverne studies anatomy and has her own set of scalpels. She's an expert on microwaving hamsters and fell in love with a dead guy once, so you know she's a Scary Chick. Since we've already got a few mad-scientist types in El Marrow, Laverne is going to be a serial-killer criminal mastermind instead. Probably.

Joining them are Angry Rabbit With Thorn in Cottontail Starchild...

...and Little Deer who Runs Swift and Silent Through Forest Starchild.

The five of them get to share a new dorm together. Remember, the Starchild kids brought thousands of dollars in college payments, so they use it to fix the place up.

Angry Rabbit and Little Deer get a gift wallpaper from wisperis, too!

Hoagie's room (every room got a fairly nice bed).

Laverne's room. Also, the bathrooms got the best showers and toilets and so on.

Bernard's room. And they also got a guitar and a stereo and other cool stuff.

Angry Rabbit is catnip to every male in the area, it turns out.

Hoagie gets working on those guitar lessons, though actually he'd rather play drums, but there's only so much room in this dorm.

Hoagie can also rumple a perfectly-made bed just by walking near it.

I got a good underbite on Bernard, but I would've liked his ears and nose a bit bigger. Still, he's tolerable-looking, right?

And only occasionally angry.

Angry Rabbit immediately gets to work on that Architecture degree. She has great plans for new housing in El Marrow as soon as she graduates. She's also thinking about changing her name, and what to pick instead of Angry Rabbit.

Little Deer (also a Science LTW) and Bernard bond over physics (same major) while Hoagie gets the blue screen of death on the dorm's single refurbished computer!

Rabbit redoes her hair and looks gorgeous.

Whoa! :O They don't have anywhere near that much in cash. This is from all the fixing-up around the place. Fortunately, Little Deer got his Dean's List cash before the repo man came.

I accidentally sent the cook away, so Little Deer tried to cook dinner for everyone, and set a fire. We'll do an end of the week count at the end of this installment, and see how we're doing on fires.

This is the second alien skintone to show up on a townie. I guess I can kinda overlook it (he's a professor), but still.

Everyone wants to get to know Rabbit better.

Okay, this is getting tiresome.

Also, here's something I didn't know, since I haven't played Uni in years. When I created the blank neighborhoods, I of course never made any dormies (oops). So when Little Deer tried to go out and meet people, the place was a ghost town. I can justify this as saying that he, his sister, and the other three roomies really are the very first students at this school. Then I created a bunch of dormies, which is where we're getting the professor from, actually.

Whoa! I'm not sure she could be related, but what a great name!

A daring fashion statement.

Little Deer meets Lucian McLachlan, and sparks kindle.

He's easy on the eyes, though he needs a wardrobe fix.

Little Deer hangs out all night at the park, making new friends.

That dormie/townie name just cracks me up. Someone's parents sure hated them!

Hm, it might be mutual for Little Deer and Lucian!

Is this like a cult or something? This isn't the same girl as before.

"Yeah, I look okay."

You can't marry a playable, Deer, even if you're both Knowledge sims with the same LTW. It wouldn't work.

Hoagie, meanwhile, has been making friends with the cow mascot (there's a girl under there).

Bernard finally gets the glasses I meant to give him at CAS.

Wow, quite the cheerleader!

Little Deer invites Lucian over for coffee.

Lucian doesn't match any of Little Deer's turnons, but Lucian thinks Little Deer has krisma, buckets of it.

If they had more turnons in common, they'd probably be three bolts by now.

They have an entire front and side yard to do this, but instead they pick the paved front porch. That's got to be the most uncomfortable place. Still, strong like can overcome a lot of things.

They spent a happy night stargazing and talking about the constellations and the myths around them.

By the rising of the sun, Little Deer has thought of a potential new name for himself. But he's not sharing it yet.

~ ~ ~

The cow girl tries to hit on Bernard, who appreciates it, sorta, but y'know, you can't spell "clown" without "cow".

Instead, Hoagie keeps trying to make a move and get his hands on her udder. They do get along great, what with the pranking and ventrilofarts and all.

Hey, that look really works for her!

Bernard, your first love should probably be science. Anyway, Rabbit's too good for you, I suspect, and there's the no-townies rule. (And I will be interested in seeing how your features pass on with an unsuspecting townie.)

The second thing I either never knew or forgot was that college time spent on community lots doesn't "not exist" when the sim returns home. So Little Deer went out and spent hours and hours wandering the campus, and suddenly it was his exam time. Everyone else was now 18 hours or so behind him. Therefore, they had to go spent a lot of time on another lot too. They all traipsed down to the park, Hoagie not bothering to get dressed first, 'cause, y'know, stuff.

Hoagie gets all the initial attention ("I knew these guys who would eat roaches for a killer hat like that"), while Bernard, Laverne and Rabbit hang back by the telephone.

But by the time he's done eating, the crowd has changed its fickle mind and moved on to the phone area.

They're playing a game of hovering hackysack, though it's hard to tell from a still picture.

While they were out, Rabbit picked up some new clothes at her brother's request, and now he looks a little less like a beach bum.

Hey iceraptoress - Trilo-G got old and became a coach!

This is getting a little ridiculous. I'll have to really watch out when I get the vacation hoods set up. Anyway, Coach peer-pressures Hoagie into working out (the only time these clothes will ever be worn - you know, Hoagie should have, like, massive tufts under his arms) so Coach can hog the guitar for hours and hours on end.

Actually, although the guitar is a magnet for every sim in the place (except the cook), it's nice because it boosts their fun so quickly. So I have them rotate between the guitar, writing term papers, doing enough skilling to get by, and then they can do whatever they want, which is usually playing more guitar.

Hoagie tries to jump into Cowla's arms, but she's not interested in a relationship.

No, she's got her horns set on Bernard, who finds her distasteful at best.

Hoagie keeps trying, though, and maybe he'll win Cowla's massive heart. It could happen!

Very late in year 2 (they're all on the same schedule now - from now on they all have to go everywhere together, like a pack of women at the mall) it finally starts to snow. It's been winter for a long time, but you'd hardly know it.

Time to make use of that stereo, isn't it?

I'm looking forward to seeing Laverne's eventual spawn, too. I don't know how she'll get a man to help her with that, but she has time yet.

By coincidence, all three guys have nearly the same outerwear, which makes sense since they're on another planet and they shouldn't have all the resources of Earth.

That ends year 2 of college (=1 week of El Marrow time) and it also ends Week 4 as well! So now it's time to take a look at the stats.

Households: 8. This didn't change - I don't count the dorm as a household, since it's not a permanent residence.
Births this week: 8
Deaths this week: 1 (Chyna)
Community Lots, POB: 18: Did not change (no new lots added)
  1. Killane Grocery (10)
  2. Wilder Dairy Mart (9)* I goofed and it should be rank 9, but it's rank 0. I'm leaving it "at 9" for right now.
  3. Benita Bodyworks (1)
  4. Daily Bread (10)
  5. Church of St. Drogo (1)
  6. Hall of Oddities (0)
  7. El Marrow Community Park (0)
  8. World of Fish (8)
  9. The Bottique (8)
  10. Max Fashion (10)
  11. Blue Casket (5)
  12. Voodoo 'N' Things (1?)
  13. Mighty Meaty Mart (10)
  14. Fruitopia (7)
  15. Chapter 11 (10)
  16. Mustard Seed (2)
  17. Electron Hut (5)
  18. For The Ladies (5)

Community Lots, NPC: 4: Also did not change.
  1. Calavera Cafe
  2. Willow Springs Cemetery
  3. City Hall (doesn't count toward the total number of community lots)
  4. Salvador Limones Military Base (ditto)

18 POBs plus 2 NPC businesses means 20 total community lots.

Business: 2 occupied (Lou Darkmoon, Rael Killane), 4 open
Athletic: 1 occupied (Morgan Blood)
Culinary: 1 occupied (David Blake)
Architecture: 1 occupied (Benita Killane), 1 reserved (Angry Rabbit Starchild)
Military: Unlocked, 1 occupied (Josh Teflin)
Education: 2 open
Slacker: 1 open
Criminal: 1 open (reserved for Laverne)
Law Enforcement: 1 reserved (Johanna Wilder), 2 open (see below)
Oceanography: 1 reserved (Suzi Keefe)
Adventure: 1 reserved (Lou Darkmoon)
Science: 1 reserved (Maddie MacPherson). This should unlock at end of week 5 when the first college kids graduate.
Medical: Unlocked, thanks to the college

Babies: 1
Toddlers: 5
Children: 7
Teens: 8
YAs: 5
Adults: 15
Elders: 0

This makes a total of 41 playables. Whew!

College fund: With Temple Gate University built, it's time to save up for a more prestigious school. The college fund is reset and now has $822 in it.

Temple Gate also gives us +5 CAS sims and +5 sim multiplier, as well as unlocking the Medical career.

CAS sims (unused) at start of week 4: 4
CAS sims used this round: 3 (the college kids)
CAS sims unlocked: 6
CAS sims total at this point: 12 (math be harrrrrd)

Fires: 4 + 1 (Wilder) = 5 + 1 (Blake) + 1(Ash) + 1 (dorm) = 8. That opens another Law Enforcement slot. One more fire and another LE slot will open up.
Electrocutions: 2 + 2 (Wilder) = 4 total. Science slot opened (given to Maddie).
Burglaries: 1
Alien Abductions: 1

We now have 41 playables plus 12 CAS reserves. The sim multiplier is 11 thanks to the college. The "big dogs" count both playables and reserves when counting population, so I'm going to do that from here on as well. That gives me 53 sims x SM11 = 583!

So, what opens at 500 population?
  • another Law Enforcement slot
  • an Education slot
  • service calls! Now they can have maids and repairmen! But no pizza or Chinese food delivery yet.
  • pet service jobs

Whew redux! Now it's time to get on to Week 5. I've also finally made a spreadsheet with every sim's name, life stage, ltw, and career on it. Things are getting complicated.
