Advent Fic #6: The Summoning

The Summoning
Fandom: City of Villains/CoH Sims (yes, both)
Prompt: cscottd, "out of time"
Notes: This is a preview of a scene for CoH Sims Season Three, which isn't out yet. Yes, I'm aware I haven't finished Season Two either. As soon as the Durrances are done, I swear.

He placed himself between those he now protected and his former allies. They knew, now, the truth about him; he could sense it, could see it in their eyes.

"Now," he said, "you must get past me if you wish to - "


He was ripped from this time and place and taken to that other, apeparing in the blood-tinged smoke that effectively hid his disoriented entrance. He was, however, a Mu adept - here, anyway - and quickly recovered.

He'd been summoned by Darkfire, servant of Scirocco, and Darkfire only ever seemed to need him when things were either very bad or likely to become so. Unfortunately for Peavey, he never had warning of when the summons might occur, and because of the Mu rituals and compact with Scirocco, had no choice but to obey. Such was the price for what Peavey had learned.

So he blasted Darkfire's enemies with bolts of crackling mind-lightning, the bare minimum of service required. The summons always were short, perhaps a minute or two, but in battle a minute or two felt like an hour, and Peavey had people to rescue from those he'd just betrayed, elsewhere and elsewhen.

At last, time was up, the summons conditions were completed, with Peavey noticing hardly anything about the battle, so occupied was he over what he might find upon his return. Then with the end of the summons, he snapped back...
